Service to Society
She established the Divakar’s Service Trust, which is fulfilling her dream, to help needy
women and children. Rural health is one of the important concerns she is addressing
where the availability of health care is limited and often nonexistent. The Trust has
been actively involved in several outreach programs, including school health programs
of anaemia control of over 45,000 children every year.
The hospital had a synergic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management,
Bangalore for a study on learning abilities related to the mid-day school meal, nutrition
and health. The Hospital trust also offers ObGyn services to several Primary Healthcare
Centers in Karnataka successfully running a FRU (First Referral Unit) in the
Chamrajanagar district. a television program called Avishkar helps create awareness in
women’s healthcare as a public awareness initiative.

Collaboration with Government
Dr. Hema has lent her expertise and her services to the Government in many
healthcare programs offering both technical and research knowledge. Prominent
among these are as National Technical Expert of Emergency Obstetric Care program.
She was the Director of standards and quality control, monitoring and evaluation of
training and supportive supervision for medical officers in rural India.
She initiated a Public Private Partnership (PPP) with the Karnataka Government for
managing Primary Health Centers and the First Reference Units (FRU) for providing
maternal healthcare. Dr. Hema was the consultant for Population Services International
presently working in the areas of unsafe abortions and IUCD insertions. She has offered
her research capabilities to supervise projects in Rural India on issues relating to
Anemia in Pregnancy, HIV, Postpartum depression, diabetes in pregnancy,
